|Your donation to Michigan K.I.D.S., Inc., the educational nonprofit for The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press will make it possible for us to continue to offer:|
The newspapers pay all administrative costs but all other costs for print and online programs and services are made possible through donations from foundations, businesses and individuals. For example, Michigan K.I.D.S. prints and delivers more than 50,000 copies of Yak's Corner annually to metro Detroit area schools at a cost of 5 cents per copy - more than $72,000 yearly.
- Yak's Corner - an award winning 8-page news magazine for ages 6-13 produced for 30 weeks during the school year
- Background student supplements - sections developed for elementary through high school students to strengthen understanding of important topical and educational issues such as bullying, elections, weather, study skills and more
- Online resources at www.dnie.com - lesson plans and vocabulary quizzes on three levels; Front Page Talking Points current events features; Cartoons for the Classrooms; Geography in the News; a local interactive current events quiz, Kid Scoop for lower elementary students and many more activities updated every Monday. We also offer educational videos and a wealth of online teacher guides.
- Student Contests
- Reading events at elementary schools
For $45 you can support Yak's Corner delivery for one classroom of 30 students but any donation - large or small - will make it possible for our nonprofit to continue to provide Michigan students with topical informational content that "writes up" to students.
